It’s 2024 Sleepers season, and here we look at some QB options for you. Alot is written about just streaming the position, but that isn’t the aim. The aim is to find a QB and offense that takes a huge step forward and outperforms their ADP. Think (as an extreme) Patrick Mahomes ahead of his first year as a starter. Grabbing him Worst case, you need to stream the position, best case you find a player who massively outperforms his ADP.
Tua Tagovailoa (MIA, QB14)
Tua is an odd QB. Because he is the QB for two of the better receivers in the league. Being able to pass to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle gives him massive upside week-to-week. But, equally, he has had plenty of games where either he has struggled with turnovers, or the Dolphins have handed the ball off to their backfield to finish the drive.
If Tua was able to limit his turnovers, it would go a long way to getting him toward the top of the QB position. Especially with the other ‘role’ receivers the team added in Odell Beckham and Jonnu Smith. Maybe not headline-grabbing players, but ones that are capable receivers and should help provide other reliable offensive targets in the offense. For context, he threw 14 INTS and had 13 fumbles last season. If he was able to just bring that down to just 20 combined turnovers, he would have finished around QB8.
Caleb Williams (CHI, QB15)
Up until a week or so ago, I could’ve written about Jayden Daniels here along with Williams, but Daniels has seen a bit of a bump recently. But, Williams is available as a mid-level QB2. The Bears were making moves to surround Williams before he was even drafted, as they added Keenan Allen and D’Andre Swift in free agency, and Rome Odunze in the draft. Adding those offense weapons to work with DJ Moore and Cole Kmet. (I’m sure Justin Fields has been thinking- why didn’t you give me these weapons to use!?)
Williams isn’t the same dual threat as Daniels, but he can still move the ball on the ground effectively. If he is able to have an immediate impact in the NFL, as is hoped for him, he should be able to finish as a QB1 with the weapons around him.
Baker Mayfield (TB, QB22)
It’s crazy to think that Mayfield would have had such a stink on him after he bounced around a little, that people thought Mike Evans wasn’t going to struggle. Well, Evans hit his 1,000-yard mark, and Mayfield had his best season in the NFL. Mayfield finished the season with 4,044 yards 28 TDs and 10 INTs on his way to finishing as QB9 overall. For this season you can get him at……QB22.
The offense overall brought back the key pieces from last season, and while there is always hype about rookies entering the league, or players returning from injury, but this feels like a big split from where he can be. After being sacked 40 times, the team invested in their offensive line with Graham Barton before bringing in Jalen McMillan and Bucky Irving to add to their offense. If Liam Coen can keep this team moving, Mayfield should be a decent fantasy option.
Will Levis (TEN, QB24)
I don’t know why- but I’m excited about Levis this season. It might be the fact I was forced to start him on his debut last season and he was great. It might be the change in coaching to Brian Callahan and the addition of a number of pass-catchers. Or, could it be all of them.
Levis struggled for consistency last season, which would have due in part to the heavy run-first offense that the team was running. Can Levis step up in a more passing-heavy offense? He has the raw ability, and he has a STACK of pass-catching options. The team had DeAndre Hopkins (**UPDATE: Hopkins has been ruled out for 4-6 weeks), Tyjae Spears, and a popular TE sleeper last season in Chigoziem Okonkwo. But, they added Calvin Ridley, Tyler Boyd, and Tony Pollard in the offseason, as well as adding OT JC Latham for protection. There is a huge amount of upside here if things align nicely.
Daniel Jones (NYG, QB27)
Jones was a popular sleeper QB last season, after a decent 2022 season- with his often overlooked strange-looking rushing ability. Unfortunately, it didn’t come about, as the Giants struggled on offense, before Jones then suffered a season-ending injury. The receiving group has improved since 2022, with Malik Nabers leading a group with a (at the moment) healthy Wan’Dale Robinson. However, one big change for him is that he no longer has Saquon Barkley in the backfield. Instead, he will need to rely on Devin Singletary.
Jones is completely free in drafts this season, even in Superflex formats he is being left to later rounds. For me, the question will be how recovered his ACL will be. If he is still feeling it, his rushing upside could really be capped. If he is able to make those Bambi-looking runs, then he could be a high-end QB2 with some upside week-to-week.
