Well Week 1 of the 2024 season is firmly in the books- here we present some Sophomore Buys & Sells ahead of Week 2. The season opener, as is now a common trend, was a little strange. These days we don’t see many offenses and/or veteran starting Quarterbacks see the field for significant snaps in pre-season. So that leads to some sloppy offensive play early in the season, which in turn can make fantasy football very hard to predict.
But that could bring about some trading opportunities in Fantasy Football which we will explore here, particularly focussing on Sophomores.
Buy Anthony Richardson
Let’s be honest, this one is going to be difficult to pull off after his 27.1 point performance and QB4 finish. But the thing is, the fantasy output could have been even better for Richardson with a few near misses on deep throws. If we expect Richardson to continue to improve as a passer with more experience and game time then we are going to see more and more of these performances and it won’t be long until he’s completely unobtainable.
Even now it’s likely impossible to get yourself a share of Richardson without giving up an elite asset in the process. But according to KeepTradeCut’s market values you could trade away CJ Stroud for Richardson plus a random 25 1st, or you could add a random 25 3rd to Jayden Daniels for him. Those are both deals I’d be very comfortable making.
Sell Bryce Young
On the opposite end of the spectrum, you may think that it would be impossible to sell Bryce Young for a reasonable value after watching his struggles against the Saints. An hour before kick off in the Panthers opening game of the season, I myself turned down a 25 1st and 26 2nd for him. But I have since seen him sold for a 25 1st and 25 3rd (see below for proof). I’d accept that offer in a heartbeat if I received it now.
Every league is different but I think it’s unlikely many deals like the above will go through unless we see a significant turnaround from Young and the Panthers over the next few weeks. Personally I’d be looking to see if there was someone out there in your league who hasn’t watched the games but has seen that Young outscored the likes of Dak Prescott, Justin Herbert, and Trevor Lawrence. If you could add a couple of picks, e.g. a 2nd and 3rd on top of Young to acquire any of those then I would absolutely get out while you can.
Buy Dalton Kincaid
If you’ve owned Kincaid in Dynasty you’ve been here before. Just as he earned your trust in 2023 with six top 12 finishes in a row, he returned from the Bills Week 13 bye week with a combined 8.8 fantasy points over his next three games. So there’s a good chance that after his 2.1 outing against the Cardinals in a game where the Bills scored 34 points, that his owner is ready to move on.
Historically the problem for Kincaid has been seeing the field ahead of fellow tight end Dawson Knox. If we disregard the Week 14 game last year which was Knox’s first game back from injury, Week 1 was the first time we’ve seen Kincaid see this many more snaps than Knox (52 to 36). It should be just a matter of time before this leads to more consistent fantasy production in a Bills offense desperate for a new favourite number one target for Josh Allen.
His KeepTradeCut value is at the lowest it’s been since before the Stefon Diggs trade. But it still has him valued as more than a random 25 1st in TE premium leagues. I wouldn’t be confident paying that much for him but you might not need to if his manager has had enough of the inconsistency.
Buy Jordan Addison
This one is less about Addison himself as he is currently carrying injuries to both ankles, and more about the state of the Vikings offense in general. Maybe the Giants are just one of the worst defences in the league, but Sam Darnold was one of the few Quarterbacks that looked competent in Week 1.
Perhaps Darnold is capable of supporting multiple fantasy relevant players on this offense and Addison’s injuries make him available at a nice discount. If you are willing to take the bet on his health, or just don’t necessarily need him to be starting for you over the next few weeks then Addison’s market value, again according to KeepTradeCut, is at an all time low as the WR36.
