Week 2 is done, so while 2024 NFL season is young, lets look at some sophomore buys & sells ahead of Week 3. Injuries and struggles to get going can present some opportunities in Dynasty. Managers may become impatient with underperforming or injured assets and may look to overpay for those that are on the field scoring points. If we can find the right time to buy and sell the under and over performers, there is significant value to be gained. Here, we’ll continue to explore this – focussing on Sophomores.
Week 2 Price Check
We’ll start with a quick review of our Week 2 Buy/Sells.
Anthony Richardson: Richardson continues to be a buy despite an underwhelming Week 2. This was the worst performance of his career with his lack of accuracy leading to three interceptions. I still have faith that he’ll be an elite fantasy asset for the next few years and if anything this performance will have just lowered his price.
Bryce Young: the former number one overall pick was an obvious sell last week and it turns out that was the last chance to get anything of value for him following the news that he’ll be benched for Week 3.
Dalton Kincaid: The Sophomore Tight End saw his target share jump but his snap share decreased. The Bills are spreading the ball around a little too much at the moment but this should consolidate somewhat and Kincaid will be a regular top 12 scorer at the position. He’s still a good buy target.
Jordan Addison: The Vikings offense continued to look good with Darnold at the helm and so as soon as Addison is back healthy his value will only go up. He remains day-to-day with an ankle injury but should be back contributing in a week or two.
Week 3 Buy/Sell
Buy Tank Dell
Over the first two weeks of 2024 Nico Collins has separated from Dell (and Stefon Diggs) as the Texans primary receiving threat. But let’s not forget that Dell suffered a fractured a fibula in Week 13 last year and was also shot in the leg during the offseason. A slow start to the season shouldn’t be a huge surprise. The reality is he’s only ever one play away from a big fantasy week and if that play comes in Week 3 you can guarantee his price will be higher than that of the WR28 according to KeepTradeCut.
I’d still be comfortable paying the equivalent of a late 1st plus a little extra for him with the knowledge that his usage is still good and the big games are coming.
Sell Sam LaPorta
There’s no doubting the fact that LaPorta is a talented tight end but his rookie season breakout was made possible by the lack of other receiving options on what was a high powered and high scoring Lions offense. Even if we forget LaPorta’s own performance so far (six catches for 58 yards), we have seen two key things to be concerned about early in the season.
Is this Lions offense as good as it was last year? The Lions averaged 3.4 touchdowns per game in 2023 and of Jared Goff’s 30 touchdown passes, 10 went to LaPorta. Through the first two games of this year they have scored just four touchdowns with three coming on the ground. Unless the offense and particularly the passing offense picks up LaPorta isn’t going to get anywhere near the mark he managed as a rookie.
Is Jameson Williams now a thing of this offense? It appears so as he leads team in receiving yards with 200 but more importantly has an almost 25% target share. Given that we can pencil Amon-Ra St Brown down to have a 25+ percent target share as well, LaPorta’s share of the pie seems to be much smaller than expected.
I’d be looking to sell now while you can still get premium prices. As an example KeepTradeCut has him valued at Mark Andrews plus a mid 25 1st!
