DraftKings Showdown 2020: New England @Los Angeles

Continuing with our DraftKings showdown slates in 2020, we bring you New England @Los Angeles and a rematch of Super Bowl LIII. Both teams look a shadow of their former selves. The Patriots currently sit at 6-6, in third place in the AFC East, and whilst the Rams currently top the NFC West at 8-4, they really lack the firepower that saw them reach their first Super Bowl since 2001.

The LA Rams are currently 4.5 point favorites, with the O/U sitting at 44.5, suggesting a somewhat low-scoring affair. It’s a must-win game for both sides. The Patriots’ already slim playoff chances would be all but eliminated with a loss. Equally, the Rams will be keen to keep ahead in an increasingly tight NFC West.

DraftKings Showdown 2020: New England @ Los Angeles Captain Options

Cam Newton ($15,900 Capt/ $10,600 Flex)

As we saw on Monday night with Josh Allen, and Tuesday night with Lamar Jackson, QBs with high rushing potential tend to be must-plays on showdown slates. I believe this is also the case with Cam.

It’s no secret that the Rams’ pass rush is elite. They are currently T3rd in the NFL for sacks, with 36 through 12 games. It’s highly likely Cam will spend a large proportion of snaps being hurried and chased by the Rams front 7. That should result in a likeable rushing upside, giving him tremendous captain value.

Only in his rookie season of 2011 did Cam score more rushing TDs (14) than he is currently at this year (11). It looks as if the most dangerous piece of the Patriots rushing offence is still Cam. He leads the Patriots in red zone rushing attempts, whilst also seeing 69.6% of the team’s rushing attempts from inside the 5-yard line. Giving fantastic TD upside.

Robert Woods ($13,800 Capt/ $9,200 Flex)

Whilst their defense is elite, their offense definitely has room for improvement. It definitely isn’t as bad as it’s often perceived, as they rank 3rd in overall yardage. H,owever it seems the Rams struggle to convert all those yards into points, as they sit 17th in points scored. Despite this, I really like Woods in this matchup.

He comes in $400 cheaper than Kupp but has out-targeted him in their last 3 games. He also leads the team in receiving TDs (5), and comes with the added upside of some jet sweep runs we have seen through the past few weeks. His price is low enough that you can fit him into the Capt. spot and still fit in plenty of other studs.

Cam Akers ($12,000 Capt/ $8,000 Flex)

Playing a back from a three-man RB-committee always comes with a certain level of risk. His price may put some people off, however with a 30-156-2 rushing stat line from his past 2 outings, he definitely has potential to score big. Especially with the Patriots’ somewhat vulnerable run defence.

New England currently give up 118.8 yards rushing per game and have conceded 11 rushing TDs this season. Meaning Akers could hit pay dirt for the third successive game.

Damiere Byrd ($1,200 Captain/ $800 Flex)

Whilst perhaps not my favourite play, Byrd’s ridiculously low price is too hard to ignore. If you roster him in the Capt. spot, you can essentially fit anyone else in the 5 flex spots, as salary is no longer an issue. Byrd only needs to see a handful of targets to hit value. Before last week’s blowout of the Chargers, Byrd saw at least 7 targets 3 games running. With the Patriots entering the matchup as underdogs, Byrd may become heavily involved in the passing game should LA stifle the New England’s run game.

DraftKings Showdown 2020: New England @ Los Angeles Flex Options

Jared Goff ($11,000 Flex)

Goff is often criticised for his high turnover percentage. Despite this, he still manages to post big numbers in the passing game. He’s thrown for 300+ yards in 4 of his last 5, so the potential for a big game is definitely there.

Rams DST ($4,400 Flex)

In their last 3 homes games, the Rams DST averaged over 14 DK FPPG, an incredible feat. Whilst some may be put off by New England putting 45 points on the Chargers last week, it’s highly unlikely to be replicated. $4,400 seems far too cheap for a defence averaging 3 sacks and 1 INT per game, especially in a game with such a low O/U.

Patriots DST ($4,200)

Both defences are definitely very much in play this week. Coming off the back of a monster performance against the Chargers, I don’t expect New England to score anywhere near the 31 FPTS they managed on Sunday, but when facing Goff, turnovers are always a possibility.

Matt Gay ($3,800)

Coming in as the favourite, and the cheaper kicker, Gay is my favourite of the two. Since the Rams placed Kai Forbath on IR, Gay is 100% on PATs through 3 games, and is 5-7 on FGs, with 3 from 40+. In a potentially low-scoring affair, Gay could be a nice value play.

Van Jefferson Jr. ($2,600)

Jefferson Jr. saw more than 2 targets on Sunday for the first time since Week 2. Despite this, at such a low price, I much prefer him to Josh Reynolds ($5,600) as I believe they will see a similar target share on Thursday night. In fact, last week Jefferson Jr. saw more snaps than his fellow WR, and is averaging over 6 DK FPPG in his last 2 starts. Again, at such a low price, he really only needs a few catches to hit value.
