After a season that looked like it might not even happen at all, we’ve sadly reached its conclusion, Super Bowl 55 and the last of our DraftKings showdown articles.
AFC Champions Kansas City travel to face the NFC Champions Tampa Bay in their home stadium. Whilst this year’s season finale may feel slightly different to what we’ve witnessed in years gone by off the field. It’s safe to say that the action on the field should be just as exciting as ever. The O/U currently sits at 56, with the Chiefs 3-point favorites, suggesting Vegas expect a tight, high-scoring affair.
If Sunday night’s spectacle is anything like 3 of the last 4 Super Bowls (I think we all know the one I’m talking about), we should be in for a great night!

DraftKings Showdown: Super Bowl 55 Captain Picks:
Travis Kelce ($16,500 Capt/ $11,000 Flex)
I’m going back to Mr. Reliable for what seems like the hundredth time this season. It’s always a toss-up here between Tyreek Hill and Kelce, but the latter is perhaps the safest play on this slate. Catching 21 passes for 227 yards and 3 TDs through 2 playoff games this year.
Kelce may have ‘disappointed’ fantasy owners in Week 12 when these two met, going 8-82-0, but I expect him to have a big game on Sunday night. Tampa Bay have been poor versus opposition TEs, surrendering the 10th-most DKPTS to the position through the regular season. Kelce feels like a mismatch against any defender he faces. Entering this game fresh off the back of 13-118-2 outing in the AFC Championship Game two weeks ago.
Sure, he is pricey. But I am almost certain he’s saving his best performance of the play-offs for the biggest stage of all.
Mike Evans ($12,600 Capt/ $8,400 Flex)
Chris Godwin’s solid run of form through the play-offs has seen him jump above Evans in pricing on this slate. Whilst only a discount of $600 in the Captain spot, I’m inclined to drop down to Evans to save on salary here. I think both Godwin and Evans have similar floors/ceilings in this one. Infact, Evans is actually the favoured of the two to hit pay dirt, with odds of +100, compared to Godwin’s +150.
He did also manage to find the end zone twice in Week 12 when these two last met. Despite an up-and-down few weeks to start the post-season, he should serve as WR1 in this pass-heavy offense on Sunday night.
Ronald Jones II ($3,300 Capt/ $2,200 Flex)
Yeah, as I’m writing this I’m still not sure why I’m doing this to myself. I really thought Jones was going to be a sneaky play in the NFC Championship Game priced two weeks ago. Available at a discounted $5,400, only for him to manage 16 yards on 10 carries for 1.6 DKPTS. Yikes. But I’m ready to get hurt again!
In all seriousness, at such a cheap price, he is a very intriguing option. He had a solid end to his regular season before missing the Wild Card game with a quad injury. The Tampa Bay run game has been a rollercoaster this season, but with one last throw of the dice, I may end up with Jones at Captain in a couple of large-field GPPs on Sunday.
It’s also worth noting that in Week 12 he went 9-66 on the ground, and 1-37-1 through the air versus Kansas City. Even if he has a game half as good as that, he should hit value comfortably. Which should allow you to fit in more of the higher priced studs on the slate.
DraftKings Showdown 2020: Super Bowl 55 Flex Picks:
Patrick Mahomes ($12,000 Flex)
It’s difficult to not play Mahomes in the Captain spot, but with such a giant salary, it becomes difficult to build the rest of the line-up. Playing him in the Flex, and pairing him with one of his pass-catchers in the Captain spot provides solid upside. Mahomes torched this Bucs side in Week 12, completing 37 of his 49 passes for 462 yards and 3 TDs, to hit 35.28 DKPTS. Aside from Kelce, Mahomes provides an extremely safe floor, only going under 20 DKPTS once this season.
Tyreek Hill ($10,400 Flex)
Much like Kelce, it shouldn’t take much convincing to pay Hill on Sunday. The Bucs have been poor versus the deep ball this year, surrendering the 6th-highest completion rate and the 11th-most TDs on passes over 15 yards. Cast your minds back to Week 12, when Tyreek Hill scored 60.9 DKPTS. No, that’s not a typo; Hill went 13-269-3 versus a porous Tampa Bay secondary. Like I said, it’s always a toss-up between Hill and Kelce in the Captain spot. I just believe Kelce to be the safer option, with a higher floor than Hill – but I still love Hill in the Flex spot.
Leonard Fournette ($7,800 Flex)
If you don’t quite fancy risking it with Jones II (and I don’t blame you), Fournette provides a solid choice here. Fournette looks to have taken a clear lead in the Bucs backfield. As well as also offering a nice bit of upside with his usage in the passing game. He’s seen 16 targets in the post-season, good for 3rd-most on the team, and has a TD in all 3 playoff games this year. Even if Jones takes back some of the carries on the ground, Fournette figures to still see some action through the air. Although I would hold off playing both him and Jones in the same line-up.
Darrel Williams ($5,200 Flex)
Despite CEH’s return last week, in which he led the backfield in snaps, Williams was far more productive with his opportunities. As always, I find one of the best ways in finding value is to look at their TD odds with the bookies. Williams currently sits at +180 to score on Sunday, and at only $5,200 for someone likely to split touches 50/50 at worst in the backfield, I love his value on this slate. We saw his namesake Damien Williams go off in Super Bowl LIV last year, with a 100 yards and a TD on the ground to go with a TD through the air. If you’re superstitious or even ‘a little stitious’, Williams provides a nice choice in the Flex spot.
Harrison Butker/ Ryan Succop ($4,000/$3,800 Flex)
As is always the case with a high O/U, both kickers are in play on Sunday. Both kickers have been incredibly reliable this season, and I see no reason to doubt their ability under pressure. Furthermore, we may see a slight decline in risk-taking from both offensive play-callers on such a big stage, and perhaps may see less 4th-down attempts if the game stays as close as Vegas predicts. Both Butker and Succop are nice salary relief options.
Rob Gronkowski ($3,000 Flex)
Perhaps this is more of a nostalgic choice, but I truly think the Brady-Gronk Super Bowl connection will be reignited after a minor hiatus on Sunday night. The pair played in 4 Super Bowls together in New England, winning 2 of those, in 2017 and 2019. Gronkowski missed Super Bowl LI through injury, but had huge games in the two years following; going 9-116-2 versus Philly in Super Bowl LII, and 6-87 in Super Bowl LIII versus the Rams. Whilst Gronkowski’s numbers have dipped this year as expected, a part of me just has this feeling Gronk could have a massive game on Sunday. If you want to roll with the Brady-Gronk narrative, lock the pair of them into your line-ups.
