Rookie Mock Draft Superflex TE Premium 3.0

For the 3rd version of our 2021 Super Flex/TE-premium Rookie Mock Draft, we decided to put a little spin on the draft. Instead of our dynasty analysts making the picks, we enlisted some help from our Discord Community! Each pick was made by one of our Discord Members and then received a grade from KF’s Dynasty Team, as well as my own analysis of the pick. I will preface the draft analysis by saying that I am all for going and getting your guy in Rookie Drafts or Startup Drafts. The grades are based on the respective analysts’ rankings and on our opinion on the value of the pick.

If you want to be a part of these in the future, be sure to join our Discord Community! Here are the results of the Mock Draft:

1.01 – Trevor Lawrence – QB – Jacksonville Jaguars

Fan – Sam Atherton @Samatherton116

It’s hard to fault someone going with Trevor Lawrence at 1.01, a quarterback that has had his talents likened to Andrew Luck. He has been the de facto 1.01 in rookie drafts for what feels like years at this point. He offers a top-end floor that some of the other quarterback prospects seem to lack. Although he doesn’t quite have the same upside for fantasy teams that some of the other prospects have either. He projects to be a winning quarterback in the NFL so that should translate to plenty of job security and plenty of starting years on your roster. He should be a top-end NFL talent at the quarterback position, and the only reason other quarterbacks go ahead of him is more fantasy potential. Sometimes real NFL success and fantasy success don’t always correlate the same, but Lawrence is an uber-safe pick at the 1.01 even in fantasy.

1.02 – Kyle Pitts – TE – Atlanta Falcons

Fan – Joe Sparshatt @spoejarshatt

It’s really hard to make a “bad” pick in the top end of this round. This draft class is super top-heavy, even following the landing spots. Pitts is another potential “generational talent” in this draft class, and it’s hard to pass up the potential and talent that Pitts has. Even if this draft wasn’t TE Premium, this still wouldn’t be considered a reach. It might be good to temper expectations a bit for 2021, as these players are all still rookies, no matter the talent level. But Pitts has perennial top 3 TE performer written all over his profile.  And even though everyone talks about his potential, Pitts still provides a top 6 tight end floor. That’s such a huge potential positional advantage to have that could lead a team to the championship. Because of the talent level, potential, and positional advantage that Pitts provides, he’s certainly worth the home run swing at 1.02.

1.03 – Justin Fields – QB – Chicago Bears

Fan – Rancid Eagle @RancidEagle

Justin Fields possesses all the tools to be a fantasy stud in the NFL. He is highly accurate at all levels of the field, he has enough mobility to provide a solid rushing floor, and he proved to be a winning quarterback in college. Like many of the quarterbacks in this class, Fields has a good chance to be the top fantasy performer. He is starting off in Chicago with a solid team around him and a defense that is still good enough to rely on during any “rookie” games he might have. He’ll take the job from Andy Dalton sooner rather than later, and potentially before the season even starts with how well he is performing in camp.

1.04 – Trey Lance – QB – San Francisco 49ers

Fan – theboyeee @theboyeee

The run on quarterbacks continues with Trey Lance. Much like the previous pick, Trey Lance also possesses the tools to be potentially the best quarterback out of this class. He is an extremely athletic player at the quarterback position, and his rushing upside can carry him in weeks when his arm doesn’t score a lot of points. That being said though, he has a great arm and was extremely accurate in college. The biggest question mark around Trey Lance was his level of competition in college. His potential is through the roof with his combination of passing and rushing, but the question mark isn’t unwarranted playing for North Dakota State. For myself, it is a small question mark that puts him below the previous two quarterbacks taken, but his upside is enough to lock him in as a top 5 selection in SuperFlex drafts.

1.05 – Najee Harris – RB – Pittsburgh Steelers

Fan – Tom Atherton @atherss

Najee might have been the biggest winner coming out of the draft at the running back position. With Javonte Williams and Travis Etienne tight on his heels, Najee landed in a spot where he is the undisputed top ball carrier. He should get workhorse number carries and receptions. His efficiency might falter from what we saw in college due to the poor Pittsburgh line, but volume should more than be enough to carry him to RB1 status year one. Age was the biggest knock on Najee coming out of college, but his talent level should be plenty to get him successfully through his first contract (especially nice since he gets an extra year from being a first-rounder). It’s not many drafts you can get a potential RB1 about midway through the first round.

1.06 – Ja’Marr Chase – WR – Cincinnati Bengals

Fan – Matt Butler@caravanbutts

Ja’Marr Chase is a stud no doubt and feels like an absolute steal at this point in the draft. He provides a top-end ceiling with a much higher floor than some of the other wide receivers in his class. That’s the exact type of player you love to get in the first round of drafts. Chase should be a player that fantasy managers build their teams around for years to come. It absolutely helps that he landed in a high-powered offense with the young talent surrounding him. Chase and Higgins will be two top-end targets for Burrow for a long time. As long as Burrow can stay healthy this year, it’s wheels up for Chase even in year one.

1.07 – Zach Wilson – QB – New York Jets

Fan – Steven Dunn @donsquinto

Zach Wilson was a bit of a late addition to the top end of this quarterback class, and some analysts still aren’t quite on board with it. He possesses the raw tools to be successful in the NFL, but still lacks a bit of refinement in his game. That makes him a bit riskier than these other quarterbacks. But despite a bit more risk to his profile, it looks like the Jets are willing to set him up for success. Something that they didn’t do with Sam Darnold. They invested in the line and brought in weapons for Wilson to grow with: Elijah Moore, Corey Davis, and Michael Carter. Again, he’s mobile enough to provide a solid fantasy floor. And at 1.07 in a SuperFlex draft, it’s hard to blame anyone for passing up a quarterback of Wilson’s caliber and potential.

1.08 – Travis Etienne – RB – Jacksonville Jaguars

Fan – Lee Strong @LeestrongUK

Etienne was considered a top-caliber running back in the 2020 NFL draft class and only improved upon his game by returning to college for his senior season. He solidified himself in the top tier of running backs talent-wise for the 2021 draft class, but he landed in a very murky situation in Jacksonville. No one is able to tell what Urban Meyer has planned for that team, much less how Etienne and James Robinson will work together in that backfield. With a lot of young pieces on that team, they probably won’t be in situations where they are running the ball quite enough to get the usage out of Etienne to justify him as being a lock for an RB1 season. And with James Robinson in town for at least another two years, it makes his future a bit murkier as well. Etienne has the talent and the potential to be a stud in the NFL, but his situation is murky at best. That makes him a high ceiling/low floor player with players that have just as high of a ceiling but a higher floor still on the board.

1.09 – Javonte Williams – RB – Denver Broncos

Fan – Dan Higgins @DanH180110

Javonte Williams was part of an electric tandem with fellow UNC running back Michael Carter. He provides prototypical workhorse size and abilities in both the rushing game and receiving game. Unfortunately, like Etienne, he was drafted into a situation where there is another established running back in the same room. But unlike Etienne, Williams’ new counterpart is only on contract for one more year and is 5 years older than James Robinson. Additionally, we’ve seen Javonte Williams succeed in a timeshare and put up insane stats while sharing the backfield with Michael Carter at UNC. Javonte should be a high-end RB2 year 1 and then its wheels up following the 2021 season. Williams should be well worth the wait, and a great pick at 1.09.

1.10 – Trey Sermon – RB – San Francisco 49ers

Fan – Andy Barrett @AndyBarrettNFL

Trey Sermon is an intriguing pick at the end of the first round. There is always a need for running backs within leagues, and if Trey Sermon hits, he is a massive boost to any team as either trade capital or a vital piece on a contending team. He showed all the necessary tools in college with his burst, vision, contact balance, and some pass-catching ability. That being said, he only flashed that skillset in a minimal sample size towards the end of the 2020 season. Not only is there minimal sample size on Trey Sermon, he got drafted into an extremely crowded backfield. The team returns Jeff Wilson and Raheem Mostert who each had over 100 touches and over 600 total yards. Sermon has the opportunity to take over as a lead rusher on the team, but it’s up in the air if that slice of the pie is enough to be fantasy-relevant. His only path to making this pick worth it is if he takes over as the workhorse in the run-heavy offense. Which is a dice roll as the entire running back room has an extensive injury history, including Sermon.

1.11 – DeVonta Smith – WR – Philadelphia Eagles

Fan – Raheel @RaheelC

This draft class is extremely deep, allowing players like DeVonta Smith to fall to the end of the first round in this rookie draft. He’s the second wide receiver to go off the board in this draft and has legit potential to immediately be the top fantasy scoring wide receiver in this class. No one in the Eagles’ wide receiver room has taken advantage and become the primary pass catcher, so the role is available for Smith’s taking. Smith had his concerns with his size coming out of college, but his elite release and route running was impossible to stop in college. His analytics were worrisome, but his tape was elite at every level. He has a bit of a risk to him, but his talent and situation provide plenty of ceiling to reach for.

1.12 – Michael Carter – RB – New York Jets

Fan – Damien Parsons @DAM000

I personally really like Carter as a player and his landing spot looks a lot better than it would have just a few short years ago. That being said, I’ll preface this by saying there are some players at wide receiver that I think provide a higher ceiling and/or higher floor. All signs out of training camp are pointing up for Carter though, and it looks like he could be the lead back sooner rather than later. But the backfield is crowded, even though those players crowding the room aren’t all that to write home about (Perine, Coleman, Johnson). If Carter can impress early, he can solidify a spot as a starter and grow with this young offense and be an integral piece. He provides low-end RB1/high-end RB2 potential and could be a good gamble at the end of the first with running back scarcity once the season starts.

2.01 – Jaylen Waddle – WR – Miami Dolphins

Fan – Sam Atherton @Samatherton116

Jaylen Waddle has been the definition of high ceiling/low floor since starting his career at Alabama. He has shown electric playmaking and possesses the ability to take it to the house on any given play. Yet he faltered a bit in college, not being able to carve out a major role his sophomore year after showing out his freshman year. Then he suffered the unfortunate injury during his junior year, his year to shine. The jury is still out on Waddle because he has the explosiveness and the raw talent as a complete receiver to be a legit top 5 WR on a yearly basis during his career. But we also have a limited sample size on the player and he missed a handful of analytics marks (specifically in Target Share, DOM rating, and Breakout Age). Sitting here at the 2.01 though, this is the exact kind of top-tier upside you want to take a home run swing at to potentially be a building block to a team.

2.02 – Elijah Moore – WR – New York Jets

Fan – Joe Sparshatt @spoejarshatt

Elijah Moore has been the talk of the town all offseason, and rightfully so. He was another late addition to the top end of this wide receiver class but steadily improved every year in college. He lands with the Jets who are desperately looking for a legitimate top receiving threat. They brought in Corey Davis as well, but I expect Moore will take over as the top target sooner than later in that offense. With his versatility to line up in the slot or on the outside, he can be a matchup nightmare. He benefits in being brought in at the same time as Zach Wilson and the other young pieces that hope to make up a core group of players on the offensive side of the ball. This core gets to learn and grow together throughout the years. It’s a bit worrisome as Wilson is a bit riskier of a prospect than Moore, and Moore’s immediate future is tied to Wilson and the Jets for the foreseeable future. All in all, Moore is a solid pick here at the top of the second round.

2.03 – Pat Freiermuth – TE – Pittsburgh Steelers

Fan – Rancid Eagle @RancidEagle

If it weren’t for the generational talent of Kyle Pitts in this draft, we would be talking about Freiermuth a lot more. He is an overall good tight end from his college performance, possessing the ability to block and provide a vertical threat. The biggest worry is about his landing spot with the Steelers. The Steelers are not known for producing fantasy-relevant tight ends and they have a loaded pass-catcher room with Ebron, JuJu, Claypool, Diontae Johnson, and James Washington. Looking forward to 2022 though, we see it won’t be nearly as crowded with all but Claypool and Johnson’s contracts expiring at the end of this season. That gives Freiermuth this season to learn and develop behind these pass catchers, and be ready to emerge as a legitimate option in this offense going into 2022. He’s a player you’ll have to wait a year or so to be viable for your fantasy roster, but based on his talent, he should be well worth the wait and provide TE1 numbers for your fantasy team down the road.

2.04 – Rashod Bateman – WR – Baltimore Ravens

Fan – theboyeee @theboyeee

Bateman appeared to be one of the safer wide receiver options in this year’s draft. But then he got drafted by a team with one of the lowest passing offenses in the league. The talent is still there, but fantasy managers have to worry about how he’s going to produce fantasy points in the Baltimore Ravens’ scheme. The offense definitely lowers his ceiling and floor a bit, which most likely went into his fantasy draft capital dropping into this tier of wide receivers. Sitting here at the top of the second, he is still a solid option. We will get to see in the coming years if Bateman can be the reason that this offense takes a step forward in the passing game.

2.05 – Mac Jones – QB – New England Patriots

Fan – Tom Atherton @atherss

Getting a first-round quarterback in the middle of the second round sounds like a pipe dream. But in the 2021 class, we had five talented quarterbacks go in the top half of the first round. Mac Jones isn’t nearly as mobile as the other quarterbacks that went ahead of him in this mock, and he’s perceived to have a harder path to starting year one. That means this pick is most likely a stash for a year or a majority of this year before Mac gets a true shot at leading the Patriots. That might not be the worst thing because hopefully, that gives the Patriots a bit of time to build up that offense and provide Mac some weapons. This is a great value pick that can provide great dividends if you’re willing to wait on it.

2.06 – Kenneth Gainwell – RB – Philadelphia Eagles

Fan – Matt Butler @caravanbutts

After Michael Carter and Trey Sermon are off the board, the running back prospects take a bit of a nosedive. That being said, I was a big fan of Gainwell during the pre-draft process and think he has a good shot to be an impact player for the Eagles. There is the worry that that impact will be more beneficial to the Eagles than to our fantasy rosters. Regardless, he should provide a great handcuff to Miles Sanders who we have seen injured in recent memory. Gainwell is a solid end of bench player with potential handcuff upside and standalone value.

2.07 – Terrace Marshall – WR – Carolina Panthers

Fan – Steven Dunn @donsquinto

Marshall provides a lot of upside with a fairly solid floor. He has alpha size and showed out at LSU when it was finally his turn to be the guy. His college metrics are solid along with his film grade. Plus he’s already impressing during camp and rumored to have solidified the third wide receiver position. With Robby Anderson most likely on his way out following the 2021 season, Marshall will be primed to take over that second wide receiver role and see a significant uptick in usage. This is especially true with Marshall’s versatility by being able to line up inside and outside, maximizing his exposure, and allowing him to be utilized in many different aspects of the passing game. A safe pick with really nice upside, can’t fault that heading towards the end of the second.

2.08 – Amari Rodgers – WR – Green Bay Packers

Fan – Lee Strong @LeestrongUK

Rodgers would have felt like a much safer pick just a few short weeks ago. But with the recent trade for Randall Cobb, it figures that Cobb will be playing the role that Rodgers would have been competing for before the trade. This means we just have to wait a bit longer on Rodgers to get his opportunity. Because even if he is potentially more talented at this stage in both of their careers, Green Bay is in the business of appeasing Aaron Rodgers right now. Now with his situation stacked against him in the near future, Rodgers still didn’t overly impress analytically with a late breakout age, average college dominator, and late declare. His film was solid, but he was often overshadowed by other talented Clemson pass catchers. There’s potential in this pick, but fantasy managers are going to have to wait a while to see if their investment pays off.

2.09 – Amon-Ra St. Brown – WR – Detroit Lions

Fan – Dan Higgins @DanH180110

Amon-Ra St. Brown looks to be a high floor player with a solid ceiling. He doesn’t have the ceiling that some others in this class have, but it’s hard seeing a scenario where he is not at least a WR3 for a fantasy team. Especially when looking at the Detroit roster constructed this year, there is not a lot in the way of St. Brown being a starter right away for the team. Reports out of camp say that he has been an extremely reliable target for Goff and that figures to continue into the season. Right now his competition is two older veterans that have struggled to stay healthy in Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams. Hockenson and Swift figure to be the focal points of this offense, but St. Brown can carve out a nice role and potentially solidify WR2 status for the foreseeable future.

2.10 – Rondale Moore – WR – Arizona Cardinals

Fan – Andy Barrett @AndyBarrettNFL

Rondale Moore at the end of the second round feels like it should be a crime. He has a clear path to be the second pass-catching option in a high octane, air raid offense with the Arizona Cardinals. DeAndre Hopkins should garner most of the defense’s attention, allowing for Rondale Moore to feast opposite of Hopkins or in the slot. He should provide immediate production as the other wide receivers there have had their opportunity and haven’t secured the role. Moore does come with his risks though as he is undersized and a success story from him would be an outlier analytically. He has also had some major injuries in college, and while these may not mean he is injury prone, his size could be an issue. But at 2.10, I’m sprinting to make this selection.

2.11 – Dyami Brown – WR – Washington Football Team

Dyami Brown was a standout at UNC and Sam Howell’s favorite target. He was overshadowed a bit by the running game that consisted of Michael Carter and Javonte Williams. Regardless, he showed dynamic playmaking ability for the Tarheels and the Football Team hopes to inject some life into their receiving core. Behind Terry McLaurin, the Football Team was desperate for talent as their younger assets have yet to stand out. Now they have Curtis Samuel and Dyami Brown joining McLaurin, forming a very formidable 3-wide set. Unfortunately for Brown, Samuel possesses a lot of the same skill sets and figures to keep Brown off the field more often than not in 2-wide sets. That caps Brown’s upside, but he still has solid potential even with the Football Team. A solid dart throw this late in the draft.

2.12 – Kellen Mond – QB – Minnesota Vikings

Fan – Damien Parsons @DAM000

You have to love investing in dual-threat quarterbacks with solid draft capital going into the third round of a SuperFlex draft. Mond showed flashes of top-end ability but was extremely inconsistent not just in college, but throughout the draft process. That being said, if he can improve in the consistency category, he looks like a very likely candidate to take over the job after Cousins’ contract is up following the 2022 season, if not sooner. If Kirk doesn’t make a deep playoff run this year, the Vikings could start looking to the future if they think Cousins’ ceiling is capped and can’t take that next step. Mond comes with a lot of what-ifs, but a potential starting quarterback with Mond’s upside this late in a SuperFlex draft is absolutely worth the dart throw.
